Greetings to all,
As we enter 2011, I'd like to welcome two new board members: Lesley Torgeson and Brian Bosse. These board members are committed to the strength of the program, the great things our alumni are doing and the ways in which you can help us continue to provide the most comprehensive networking, leadership training and quality of life program in Santa Barbara.
I also ask that you mark your calendars and join us, if just for 30 minutes, at one of this year's topic days. This year's class has proven to be extremely dynamic and their commitment to excellence has been exemplified by the quality of the topic days so far. They have also made huge commitments to Girls Inc. for this year's Community Service Project (see below) and require your assistance to pull off one of the biggest projects this organization has ever been a part of. They not only require your financial support but your support through your connections to the Santa Barbara Business and Non Profit community that will be needed to procure the hardware, trees and resources needed to complete the garden project.
It has been another great year for LSBC and we hope you are able to celebrate the accomplishments of this year's class at the May 13, 2011 ribbon cutting at Girls Inc. of Santa Barbara or our graduation on May 19, 2011. On behalf of the board, we hope to see you soon.
Brian Schwabecher, Board President
Girls Inc of Santa Barbara Chosen for LSBC Class of 2011 Community Service Project
The 2010-2011 class of Leadership Santa Barbara County (LSBC) will continue the organization’s “class project” tradition by showing its commitment to supporting a local non-profit organization. This year’s class is partnering with Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara. The “class project” was inspired by LSBC Board members who felt the program could contribute meaningfully and tangibly in the community.
At the Girls Inc. Goleta Valley Center, LSBC will create an outdoor learning space that will include an open air structure suitable to hold classes of 14 girls and a sustainable garden. The garden will feature planter beds, fruit trees, and rows for growing produce that will be used in the cooking classes. Additionally, LSBC is coordinating a mural project with the girls at the organization’s Santa Barbara Center.

Throughout the year, the class will work hand in hand with Girls Inc. to complete this in-depth project. The scope of work has been determined by the LBSC class members and they plan to execute the effort before May's graduation event. The May topic day will unveil the project to the public.
Girls Incorporated of Greater Santa Barbara celebrates more than 50 years as an affiliate of a 146 year-old national non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold! Through educational, research-based programs, activities and advocacy, Girls Incorporated offers girls ages 4-1/2 to 18 years with opportunities to experience success as they prepare to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

Congratulations & Farewell
Board Of Trustees Congratulates Shirley Hobson on her retirement
It is with joy and sadness that Leadership Santa Barbara County announces the retirement and departure from the LSBC Board of Trustees of Shirley Hobson, the Board Secretary and board member for 6 years. Shirley was deeply committed to the continuance of the Leadership Santa Barbara program and often spoke of her experience as vital to her other community outreach efforts on which she continues to focus. Shirley has a long lineage of community involvement and most recently was a Charter member of the Santa Barbara Children's Project and Past President of CASA. Shirley has opted to enter "full" retirement and assist the efforts of her husband, Dr. John Hobson. We wish both of them the best and hope the next time you see her you are able to thank her for her continued commitment to the quality of life in Santa Barbara.
Dru vanHengel, Past President departs Santa Barbara and the LSBC Advisory Council
Please also wish our immediate Past President, Dru van Hengel, best of luck as she enters the private sector and relocates to Portland, Oregon. Dru had her hand in a great deal of progress during her time as president. The community service project (see above) and this very newsletter were part of Dru's vision and contribution to the program. Without her guidance, commitment and time and energy, LSBC would not be positioned as one of the primary Networking, Leadership Skills and Community Education programs as it is today. If you would, please help us acknowledge Dru's contributions to LSBC by wishing her well and thanking her at your next opportunity.
The Board of Trustees for Leadership Santa Barbara County would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to both Dru and Shirley and wish them the best in their new endeavors.
